Frequently Asked Questions

What are Local Health Involvement Groups or LHIGs?

Local Health Involvement Groups or ‘LHIGs’ are made up of residents of Southern Health-Santé Sud who care about health and health services. The groups exist to explore and provide input to the Southern Health-Santé Sud Board of Directors on issues that impact the delivery of local health services.

In Southern Health-Santé Sud, there are a variety of Local Health Involvement Groups and ways for you to participate:

  • Geographical LHIGs (1 group with consultations in English, 1 group with consultations in French, 1 Indigenous group): These groups are made up of 10-15 community members with a 2-year minimum commitment. These groups meet 2-5 times per year to discuss broad-level health issues.
  • Patient Experience LHIG: This group is made up of a core group of members and will meet a minimum of 5 times a year. The focus of this group is patient safety and improving the patient experience.
  • Email Consultations: This group will have no minimum commitment and will allow you to respond to specific health questions a handful of times throughout the year at your own convenience.

Meetings will be held in communities around the region. You will have your mileage reimbursed for travel to and from meetings as per Regional Health Authority guidelines.

Who can apply to be a member of a Local Health Involvement Group?

Anyone who lives within Southern Health-Santé Sud and is at least 16 years of age can apply to be a member of our LHIGs. Each regional health authority has similar groups established. Please visit the Government of Manitoba website if you are unsure of your RHA. We are looking for people of different ages, cultures, backgrounds with a variety of life experiences to participate on the LHIGs.

How are members selected?

Members are approved by the Southern Health-Santé Sud Board of Directors to ensure that diverse points of view are represented in each LHIG. Community members who are selected to be a member of a LHIG have a passion for health and a desire to help improve the health system, like to think about the “big picture” and can think about the needs of others. Members must be comfortable in sharing ideas in a group and be good listeners.

Are LHIG members paid?

No. LHIG members are volunteers and are not paid for their participation. However, mileage incurred as a result of LHIG activities will be reimbursed according to Regional Health Autority guidelines.

What will the Region do with my feedback?

A report of the discussions from the LHIGs is presented to the Southern Health-Santé Sud Board of Directors. The report is used by the Board in their decision-making process. Feedback will be provided to the LHIGs members as to how the information they provided was used.
