World Breastfeeding Week

Breastfeeding LOGOSparked by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) celebrating breastfeeding worldwide, World Breastfeeding Week is marked in Canada each year in early October.  This year’s theme is Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life, with a message to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.  With this in mind, during the month of October, public health nurses throughout Southern Health-Santé Sud will attend Healthy Baby groups to talk about breastfeeding.

As part of this year’s theme, the conversation is around the need for access to safe and affordable food and how breastfeeding can be one-step to helping a family provide food security to infants from the very beginning of life, essentially contributing to food security for the whole family. Breastfeeding helps to ensure that every child starts out with the same advantages despite the neighborhood, city or country where they are born.   James P. Grant (past Executive Director of UNICEF)  shares that  "Breastfeeding is a natural 'safety net' against the worst effects of poverty. If the child survives the first month of life, then for the next four months or so, exclusive breastfeeding goes a long way toward cancelling out the health difference between being born into poverty and being born into affluence. It is almost as if breastfeeding takes the infant out of poverty for those first few months in order to give the child a fairer start in life and compensate for the injustice of the world into which it was born.”

Breastfeeding is also a prime example of the deep connections between human health and the environment. Breastmilk is a natural, renewable food that is environmentally safe and green because it is produced and delivered to the consumer without pollution, packaging or waste.

One of the ways we promote, protect and support breastfeeding in Southern Health-Santé is through the display of ‘Breastfeeding is Welcome here’ signage in our sites and facilities. When you see these signs, know that not only are we all helping that mother and her baby by providing a welcoming place to feed her child, we are also supporting her in providing for her family and in protecting the planet.

Breastfeeding: the foundation of life… We all have an important role to play in ensuring the growth, development and survival of children around the world.
