About the Course

One of the most challenging roles within the Emergency setting is that of triage. With increasing pressures nationally on Emergency Departments, the primary focus in the development of this workshop has been to improve patient care through increased accuracy and reliability in the triage process.

This course discusses the goals of triage and the roles and responsibilities of the triage nurse. You will learn about the 5 levels of triage as described in the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale guidelines for both adults and pediatrics. You will be provided with an opportunity to apply this knowledge to numerous case studies to increase the reliability and validity of CTAS.
NENA recommends taking this course every 2 years.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the historical origin and role of triage.
  • Review and enhance your patient assessment skills.
  • Apply professional standards of emergency nursing practice in triage.
  • Utilize the CEDIS Presenting Complaint List.
  • Prioritize patient care based on the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of patient flow, care processes and communication in the Emergency Department.

Who Should Attend?

Emergency nurses who perform triage of patients in facilities.
