‘Home for the Summer’ Program

In partnership with MB Healthcare Providers Network, the region is pleased to participate and coordinate the ‘Home for the Summer’ program in our area with support from clinics, facilities and communities. The program offers summer employment to post-secondary medical students providing hands-on experience both in the hospital environment and with patient interactions. This is a great opportunity to learn more about communities in the region, work alongside trained health care providers and enhance knowledge and skills in the area of study. To be eligible for the program, you must originate from the region or have a connection to the region and be currently enrolled in a health care training program that is a future need for the region.

Students are requested to forward the following details:

  1. Student name, contact information and area of study (health program student is currently enrolled in)
  2. Program length and anticipated year of graduation
  3. Where is the training location (Institution, City/Province)?
  4. Hometown
  5. Date you are able to begin summer work

We offer Job Shadowing opportunities for students interested in a career in health care. These opportunities provide a realistic job preview by allowing you to observe an employee performing the duties of their job to better understand what it all entails. Job shadowing is a great way for you to explore various careers prior to committing to an educational program as well as a way to get to know more about the health care system.

Mentorship Program

As a new nurse, we offer a Mentorship Program in the hopes that it increases your chances for success and assists you in your integration to the health care industry. This program, offered to each newly-hired graduate nurse, is a voluntary, mutually beneficial and long term relationship. Benefits of this program include:

Practicum Opportunities

We welcome students and apprentices in all areas of study to complete their student practicum and placement within the region. We are committed to providing each student and health service provider with an opportunity to gain valuable clinical and work experience in a health care related career and to help them achieve their goals. Contact your Education Institution Student Services Coordinator to arrange for a student practicum placement in one of our sites.

Student Incentive Grant

Southern Health-Santé Sud is pleased to offer a $ 4,000.00 Student Incentive Grant to post-secondary students who are enrolled in the following high demand healthcare occupations:

  • Midwife
  • Nursing: Registered Nurse & Registered Psychiatric Nurse
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Pharmacist
  • Rehabilitation Services: Audiologist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech Language Pathologist
  • Respiratory Therapist

If you are completing your final year of studies in one of the above programs, you are invited to apply for the Student Incentive Grant. Applications must be submitted prior to your date of graduation. Applications will be reviewed by the Recruitment and Retention Team for determination.

To receive a $4 000 Student Incentive Grant, you must:

  • Successfully complete your program of study;
  • Provide a copy of your resume and education transcripts;
  • Provide two letters of reference;
  • Provide documentation from the post-secondary education institute confirming your date of graduation; and
  • Accept and comply with the conditions of a required Return of Service (ROS) commitment of 12 months with Southern Health-Santé Sud.

We are pleased to offer a Student Incentive Grant – Practical Nursing to post-secondary students who are enrolled in a Manitoba Practical Nursing program which include: Assiniboine Community College, Université de Saint-Boniface and University College of the North.

If you are completing your final year of studies in the above program, you are invited to apply for the Student Incentive Grant – Practical Nursing. To receive a $2 000 Student Incentive Grant – Practical Nursing, you must accept and comply with the conditions of a required Return of Service (ROS) commitment of 12 months with Southern Health-Santé Sud.
